Sonomed E-Z Scan AB5500+ — New Open Box A/B-Scan Ophthalmic Ultrasound

Sonomed E-Z Scan AB5500+ new open box — front view with touch-screen displayThe Sonomed E-Z Scan AB5500+ is a portable, computer-controlled ophthalmic ultrasound system that pairs a contact A-scan for axial-length biometry with a motor-driven B-scan for imaging the eye and orbit. Both channels run 10 MHz transducers, and the whole instrument is controlled from its color touch screen, so there is no separate computer to set up at the exam lane.

Because the Sonomed E-Z Scan AB5500+ covers two jobs in one unit, a practice can measure axial length for IOL power calculation and image the posterior segment when the view is blocked by a dense cataract or vitreous hemorrhage, without buying two devices. At about 5.25 lb (2.4 kg) it moves easily between exam rooms.

Ultrasound remains the fallback when optical biometry cannot get a reading: a study in the National Library of Medicine compared optical biometers and immersion ultrasound in dense cataracts, where optical devices can fail to measure some eyes.

Why Practices Choose the Sonomed E-Z Scan AB5500+

Sonomed E-Z Scan AB5500+ new open box — side view of control knobs and screen

  • A-scan and B-scan in one unit — axial-length biometry and diagnostic B-scan imaging from a single instrument, with both probes included.
  • Works where optical biometry cannot — contact A-scan measures eyes with dense cataract or other media opacity.
  • Four A-scan eye types — Cataract, Dense Cataract, Aphakic and Pseudophakic, with velocity settings for common pseudophakic lens materials such as PMMA, acrylic and silicone.
  • Built-in IOL formulas — Binkhorst, Regression-II, Theoretic-T, Holladay and Hoffer-Q, with Haigis available as an option.
  • Touch-screen workflow — color backlit LCD with touch overlay and stored settings for multiple users.
  • Foot pedal capture — freeze A-scan and B-scan images hands-free while the probe stays on the eye.
  • Printed records — a printer is included, and the RS-232 port supports transferring results to a computer.

Clinical Applications

  • Axial-length measurement and IOL power calculation for cataract surgery planning.
  • Biometry in dense-cataract eyes where optical biometers cannot obtain a reading.
  • B-scan imaging of the posterior segment behind opaque media, such as vitreous hemorrhage or a mature cataract.
  • Evaluation of suspected retinal detachment, intraocular masses and foreign bodies.
  • Anterior chamber depth and lens thickness measurements as part of the surgical work-up.

Who This Is For

  • Cataract and comprehensive ophthalmology practices that need dependable ultrasound biometry.
  • Surgery centers that want an ultrasound backup alongside an optical biometer.
  • Practices adding diagnostic B-scan capability without buying a separate imaging system.
  • Satellite clinics that need a portable A/B-scan unit.
