A/B Scans

A-scan and B-scan ultrasound show you what light-based instruments cannot. An A-scan measures axial length by ultrasound for IOL power calculation — the fallback that still works when a dense cataract defeats optical biometry. A B-scan produces a two-dimensional image of the posterior segment straight through media opacities, which is why it remains the diagnostic tool of choice for suspected retinal detachment, vitreous hemorrhage, intraocular tumors, and ocular trauma when the fundus simply cannot be visualized. Most ophthalmic units run a 10 MHz probe, and many combine both modalities in a single system.
