Haag Streit BM 900 — Used Dual-Column Slit Lamp with Goldmann 900 Tonometer

The BM 900 uses a convergent stereoscopic microscope at a 13° stereo angle for sharp depth-cued anterior-segment views. Magnification is 10× and 16× via the standard Haag-Streit two-step turret. Slit width is continuously variable from 0 to 8 mm; slit length is 1 to 8 mm continuous plus fixed apertures. Built-in filter set includes blue (cobalt), red-free (green), and 10% grey. The slit image can be rotated ±90°, with horizontal swivel ±90° and vertical 0 to 20°.
According to a National Library of Medicine-indexed study (Can J Ophthalmol, 2015), yellow- and blue-filtered fluorescein imaging produces clinically superior conjunctival and corneal staining contrast — the standard slit-lamp biomicroscopy workflow the BM 900 was designed for.
Why Practices Choose the BM 900
Gold-standard Haag-Streit optics — the BM 900 mechanical platform is the most-cloned slit-lamp design in ophthalmology; widely supported by independent service.
- 2-step magnification (10× and 16×) — the workhorse magnifications for routine biomicroscopy. Short observer-to-patient distance keeps the operator close to the slit and patient.
- Convergent stereoscopic 13° stereo angle — sharp depth perception across the cornea, anterior chamber, lens, and anterior vitreous.
- Continuously variable slit (0–8 mm width, 1–8 mm length) + fixed apertures for circular spots.
- Built-in filter set — blue (cobalt) for fluorescein, red-free (green) for vessels and RNFL, 10% grey for photophobic patients.
- ±90° slit rotation — adjust slit orientation for optic-section, conic, or sclerotic-scatter techniques.
- Integrated Haag Streit 900 tonometer — Goldmann-type applanation tonometry on the same instrument; the clinical reference standard for IOP measurement.
- Halogen reliability — the halogen platform is widely-stocked for replacement bulbs vs. proprietary LED modules.
Clinical Applications
- Routine slit-lamp biomicroscopy — full anterior-segment evaluation including cornea, iris, lens, and anterior vitreous.
- Goldmann applanation tonometry — gold-standard IOP measurement for glaucoma evaluation and follow-up.
- Corneal disease grading — staining patterns (fluorescein with cobalt), opacities, abrasions, ulcers, and post-surgical wounds.
- Glaucoma anterior-chamber assessment — slit-beam evaluation of AC depth, pigment dispersion, pseudoexfoliation, plus AT 900 IOP.
- Cataract grading — direct illumination, retroillumination, and sclerotic scatter for nuclear, cortical, and PSC assessment.
- Vitreoretinal contact-lens biomicroscopy — Goldmann or Volk indirect lenses for posterior-segment evaluation.
Who This Is For
- Optometry and general ophthalmology practices that want the Haag-Streit gold-standard slit-lamp + Goldmann tonometer combo at a sub-$6K used price.
- Multi-doctor groups standardizing on the Haag-Streit 900 platform across BD/BM/BQ tiers for consistent service and parts.
- Practices replacing an older non-Haag-Streit slit lamp + standalone tonometer setup with an integrated solution.
- Clinicians who prefer halogen illumination for predictable color rendition and lower long-term consumable cost than LED modules.
