Nidek’s Large Pupil Zone Imaging Method reads refraction over a wide pupil area instead of a single central point, so the result better reflects how the patient sees in everyday lighting. A Super Luminescent Diode (SLD) paired with a highly sensitive CCD produces a sharp ring image even when the fundus reflex is weak, helping the Nidek ARK-1e autorefractor keratometer measure through cataracts and other media opacities.

A clinical study indexed by the National Library of Medicine found that Nidek’s ARK-1 autorefractor platform gives a reasonable and repeatable estimate of refractive error in adults when compared with subjective refraction and retinoscopy.
